Katie Grice

Katie began her career in the cheese industry in 2012, bringing leadership and inventory-management experience to the role of Cheese Buyer at a Whole Foods Market in Austin, Texas. The role inspired her to learn more about the products she sold, as well as engaging in the education of others. She learned the power that cheesemongers have to impact the industry: “You have this incredible privilege to represent the voice of all the people who worked to get that product in the case.”

During that time, she spent a summer at Quicke’s Traditional Ltd, learning about British cheeses as well as visiting many farms, cheesemakers, and distributors in England and France, including mongering behind the counter at Neals Yard Dairy. The welcoming and impressive world of cheesemakers inspired her to work for a production company in the States.

Jasper Hill Farm welcomed Katie in 2015, where the wide variety of cheese types provided an extraordinary opportunity to learn about affinage. After a year in the vaults, she transitioned into the Shipping Department. Now, she leads a team of men and women who hand-wrap cheese, cut and wrap wedges, as well as fulfill Mail Order and Direct Sales orders. One of her biggest contributions to Jasper Hill has been improving efficiency systems and creating a systematic approach to how logistics and labor are utilized to meet the demand of the workload. “I’m honored to contribute to a community that cherishes its people, animals and land.”

Jasper Hill Farm

Jasper Hill is a working dairy farm with an on-site creamery in the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont. A 22,000 sq ft underground aging facility maximizes the potential of cheeses made by the creamery, as well as those made by other local producers. Leftover whey from the cheesemaking process is fed to heritage breed pigs, roaming the woodlands beyond the cows’ pasture. A state-of-the-art hay-drying facility, a nutrient-recovery system known as the “Green Machine”, and an on-site laboratory all represent the level of innovation to building a sustainable future. Jasper Hill’s mission is to make the highest possible quality products in a way that supports Vermont’s working landscape. The team is driven to be the standard bearer of quality and innovation in the artisan cheese industry while promoting their regional taste of place.
